To many he was known only as the man who pardoned Richard Nixon—the man who closed the book on the Watergate scandal before the story could be fully told. To those people he will always be remembered as the man who, after having the presidency thrust upon him, let the nation’s biggest crook off the hook.
Well, Gerald Ford died yesterday evening, and I think that many Americans will now be able to peer into their hearts and reconsider long-held and overly harsh opinions of the man. It was, after all, neither a partisan nor a charitable decision on President Ford’s part when he pardoned Richard Milhous Nixon. It was a decision he made out of necessity…a decision that put the nation on the road to healing.
I clearly remember the days of Watergate—what a nightmare it was. And in that controversial act of pardoning old Tricky Dick, President Ford set us all free. He will be lovingly remembered by all Americans.

I would like to offer my condolences to his family. I’m sure however, that their grief will be assuaged in the knowledge that history will inevitably shine a kind light on his lifelong service to our nation.
