Breaking News:
Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr is threatening to take his ball and go home if Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki follows through with plans to meet with George Bush in Jordan next week. Specifically, he’s threatening to pull his faction from the Iraqi government—a faction without which al-Maliki cannot survive politically. The al-Sadr faction holds about 30 seats in Parliament and is al-Maliki’s primary base of support.
Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. It’ll be interesting to see what transpires with this deal. It’s just one more example to illustrate the assertion that the Iraqis have neither the political nor the genetic stuff required to run a democracy. It clearly shows that they never wanted democracy in the first place. It shows that they don’t even know what it is. And it shows that they don’t deserve it.
